Leonardo DiCaprio Passes on "Star Wars" in Favor of "Robotech"

Nic Mathieu tapped to direct movie back in January

Not for the first time, Leonardo DiCaprio is in the conversation for a live-action, Hollywood adaptation of anime. He was in talks to produce Ninja Scroll and produce and maybe star in Akira. Now, he might be in line for a Robotech role. Latino Review has been going through Star Wars chatter leading up to Disney's D23 and mention that DiCaprio turned down a role in Star Wars VII in favor of Robotech.

Back in January 2013, the Hollywood Reporter has learned that Nic Mathieu has been tapped to direct Robotech, Warner Bros.’ big-budget adaptation of Harmony Gold's localization of Tatsunoko-produced mecha anime The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA.

While various writers have been attached to the project this is the first time a director has been tied to the big budget mecha title. Mathieu is a commercials director who will be stepping up to direct a movie for the first time.

The project, which moved into development in the wake of Transformers' success, has Akiva Goldsman and Tobey Maguire producing along with Matthew Plouffe, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell.
