Mamoru Oshii serves as chief director on project with 2billion yen budget
A streamed press conference, featuring an 8-meter-tall Ingram mech in addition to the cast and director, has filled in the details for previously teased live-action adaptation of Headgear's (Mamoru Oshii, writer Kazunori Itō, mecha designer Yutaka Izubuchi, character designer Akemi Takada, and manga artist Masami Yūki) realistic police mecha series Patlabor. Under the title The Next Generation - Patlabor, it will feature former Hello! Project (umbrella for pop acts including Morning Musume) singer Erina Mano as pilot lead Akira Izumino.
Other cast members in the story's third generation mobile police team include:
Yuuma Shiobara - Seiji Fukushi
Ekaterina Krachevna Kankaeva - Rina Oota
Maintenance chief Shigeo Shiba - Shigeru Chiba
Captain Keiji Gotouda - Kakei Toshio
Mamoru Oshii will be serving as chief director on the project, budgeted at 2billion yen. A zero episode will lead into next year's seven-part series of 12 theatrically screened 48-minute episodes, with a 2015 full-length movie to follow.
Oshii directed a 2-minute CGI/live-action Patlabor pilot film in 1998.
Maiden Japan has recently licensed the Patlabor anime TV series and OVAs for a new North American release.
