"Godzilla" Tops Japanese Box Office

Movie is on track to perform comparably to "Transformers: Dark of the Moon"

Jokes about the kaiju's overweight appearance didn't stop Japanese movie goers from buying tickets to the Gareth Edwards’ Hollywood retelling of Godzilla, which finally opened in the lizard's homeland last weekend.

Variety notes that with an estimated $6.9 million opening across 773 screens, the movie is on par with Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which grossed $54.2 million in Japan, and more that double Pacific Rim's $14.5 million trajectory. The film, which was presented in four formats (dubbed, subbed, 2D and 3D) topped and Kanjani Sentai Eightranger's Eight Ranger 2 for the #1 spot in a weekend in which hot weather drove up theater attendance.

While some Japanese critics praised the movie's faithfulness to the original, others dinged it for the King of Kaiju's sparse screen time.
