45-Year-Old Man Arrested for Selling Pirated Anime Stickers in Akihabara

"I thought it was allowed in Akihabara."

The Metropolitan Police Department has arrested a 45-year-old male part-time worker on suspicion of carrying 53 pirated stickers of popular anime series including Neon Genesis Evangelion, One Piece, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica, for selling purpose in Akihabara, Tokyo, last October.

According to the police, the suspect made stickers for Suica (prepaid e-money card for trains and buses) using anime character images without permission from the respective copyright holders, and sold them in Akihabara at the price of 500 yen (4.17 US dollars) for one. The estimated sales for three years is about 2 million yen (16,700 US dollars). The suspect has already admitted his charge and said, "I thought it was allowed in Akihabara."
