"Shin Godzilla" Becomes Top-Grossing Live-Action Film of 2016 So Far

Already surpassing the box-office gross of the two Hollywood Godzilla films

As predicted, Toho has confirmed that Shin Godzilla (English title: Godzilla Resurgence) has earned a massive 5.3 billion yen on 3.6 million admissions in one month since its release in Japan on July 29. It has become the top-grossing live-action film of 2016 in Japan so far, breaking the previous record of 4.61 billion yen marked by Nobunaga Concerto based on Mayumi Ishii's manga series of the same name.

The Shinji Higuchi-directed film has also already surpassed the total theatrical gross of the two Hollywood-made Godzilla films in Japan, Roland Emmerich's 1998 film (5.1 billion yen) and Gareth Edwards' 2014 film (3.2 billion yen). It now ranks 3rd in the Japanese box office of 2016 including anime films, and the second successful film Yo-kai Watch: Enma Daiou to Itsutsu no Monogatari da Nyan! with 5.53 billion yen is already in reach.
