The all-new fill will open in United States theaters on March 9
The official Twitter for Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale, the all-new anime film based on Reki Kawahara's sci-fi action light novel series, confirmed on March 1 that the film had collected over one billion yen from Japanese theaters by February 28, in 11 days since its release in its home country.
The highly anticipated film opened in Japan on February 18. It delivered an impressive 425,762,760 yen from the 308,376 tickets sales in its first two days and became the top-grossing film in Japan for the weekend of February 18-19. It was the best opening weekend box office record for the distributor Aniplex. In its second weekend of February 25 and 26, it still ranked second, only behind Damien Chazelle's award-winning musical film La La Land.
Moviegoers in the third week (March 4-10) will receive "Sword Art Online: Hopeful Chant," an over 100-
page newly-written novel by the original author Reki Kawahara. The novel's original illustrator abec also
provides the cover and insert arts for the special novel.
