Tomohiko Ito-directed film has earned $31.77 million worldwide
Aniplex has announced that Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale will receive wide release in over 6,000 theaters in the mainland China from September 15, under the Chinese title "劇場版 刀剑神域 -序列之争-." In its home country Japan, the film had only 151 theaters in its opening weekend of February 18-19, 2017.
In comparison to the two recent successful Japanese films in the world's second largest film market, Makoto Shinkai's anime film Kimi no Na wa./Your Name. was released in 7,000 theaters in December 2016, then the live-action film adaptation of Hideaki Sorachi's action comedy manga Gintama opened in 8,000 theaters with over 12,000 screens on September 1, 2017.
Following the preview in Shanghai last Saturday with character designer Shingo Adachi and the Yui voice actress Kanae Ito, director Tomohiko Ito will again join a premium screening event in Beijing on
September 16, with the Kirito voice actor Yoshitsugu Matsuoka this time.
According to the press release, the 119-minute film has made 2,523,828,360 yen on 1,774,191
admissions from its domestic run by September 1, and has earned 980 million yen and sold 1.15
million tickets in the international market.
LiSA, the original singer of the film's Japanese theme song "Catch the Moment," sings the song in
Chinese by herself, and posted a short clip of the Chinese version on her official Twitter.
In Japan, the film's DVD/Blu-ray is set for release on September 27. The discs come with with a newly-
written novel Sword Art Online: Cordial Code by the original novel author Reki Kawahara with illustrations
by the novel illustrator abec.
