"One Piece" Manga Author Oda Sends Special Art for New Adults in His Hometown

With a message: "Don't worry!! We will keep supporting you together!!"

On this year's Coming-of-Age Day in Japan, January 8, all new adults in Kumamoto Prefecture received a special illustration and message from the internationally popular manga series One Piece author Eiichiro Oda. The art features the manga's protagonist Monkey D. Luffy and Tony Tony Chopper with a message "Don't worry!! We will keep supporting you together!!" It will be also diplayed on the Kumamoto prefectural office's official website for a limited time.

The 43-year-old artist was born in Kumamoto-city in the prefecture in 1975. The city and its surrounding ares were hit by a huge earthquake in April of 2016, killing 247 people and injuring more than 2,700. At least 180,000 people were forced to evacuate to shelters. The amount of economic damage caused by the earthquake was about 4.6 trillion yen (40.6 billion US dollars). Since then, Oda has supported his hometown areas through the "One Piece Kumamoto Reconstruction Project" and this special art is part of it.
