Adaptation based on fantasy RPG smart phone game approaches new levels of meta with anime collaboration spoof
Last Period: the journey to the end of the despair, an ongoing TV anime inspired by a fantasy RPG smart phone game, is teaming up with Higurashi - When They Cry, an anime based on a series of visual novels, in a collaboration that can only be described as "supremely meta". The 3rd of episode of Last Period, entitled "Hand-To-Mouth-Life", will feature guest appearances by the cast of Higurashi.
In addition to spoofing anime x smart phone game collaborations, the team-up is also based on a pun. Although written with different Kanji characters, the phrases for both "hand-to-mouth life" and "evening cicadas" are pronounced as "higurashi". The story of the episode involves Hal and his friends journeying to Cursed Village to clear a mansion of Spirals in their search for "yen", but what they find there is more than they bargained for...
Last Period: the journey to the end of the despair is directed by Yoshiaki Iwasaki and features animation by J.C. Staff. The series is currently streaming on Crunchyroll, who describe the story as follows:
"I’m never going to give up!! For that reason, I became a Period!!” Evil demons known as "Spiral" -made of souls who died in agony- threaten the people of the world. In order to stand up against Spirals, people founded the "Arc End". Individuals whose skills are recognized are admitted to Arc End to become “Period” to fight for peace. Hal, who failed the Period admittance test 38 times, was accidentally admitted as an “Assistant Period” in Arc End 8th Squad. Forming a team along with other new members, Gazel and Liese, he is finally able to take his first step towards reaching his goal!
