Makoto Shinkai Says on Twitter: His New Feature Film is Set for Next Year

His previous film "Your Name." became the second-top grossing Japanese film of all-time

45-year-old anime director Makoto Shinkai tweeted in English on his official Twitter account on August 2 that his next feature film following Kimi no Na wa./Your Name. (2016) is set for next year.

He has been working on his new film project at least since May 2017 when he had to be absent from

the commendation ceremony for the 26th Annual Japan Movie Critics Awards, in which he won its best

animation director award for Your Name.

While no details such as title and plot has not yet been revealed, he recently teased on Twitter that

many umbrellas will appear in his new film as with his 2013 film Koto no Hano Niwa/The Garden of

Words, but in totally different atmospheres. And you can guess from the word "Toshima Ward" in

the visual that a part of its story is set in Tokyo.

He also said that the new film has a lot of rain scenes.
