Monster Strike The Movie: Sora no Kanata (Beyond The Sky), the second anime feature film based on mixi's internationally popular smartphone game franchise Monster Strike, was released in 336 theaters across Japan last Friday, October 5, and became the top-grossing film of the weekend. However, its first Saturday and Sunday's total gross of 150.99 million yen (115,451 admissions) was only 34.3% of that of the first film in December 2016.
The second film earned 214.16 million yen from the 168,720 tickets sales in its first three days from Friday to Sunday. Judging from its first weekend result, it is expected to end its domestic run with around 1 billion yen.
Meanwhile, Gintama 2: Okite wa Yaburu tame ni koso Aru finally dropped out of the top 10 in its eighth week of release. The live-action sequel had made 3.5 billion yen by its seventh week and has
become the third most successful Japanese live-action film of this year so far. It has not yet been
confirmed if it has already surpassed the first film's total box office gross of 3.84 billion yen, and
there is still no official words about the possible third installment.
In spite of its limited release with only 77 theaters, the 68-minute OVA Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another
SEVEN STORIES Episode 4 "Lost Small World Ori no Mukou ni" failed to rank in top 10.
