Square Enix says it would have been too difficult to continue providing a quality experience
Square Enix's idol-training mobile game Idol Fantasy was billed as a "magical heart-throbbing fantasy," complete with art by renowned creators and designers like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts' Tetsuya Nomura. Unfortunately for fans of the game—which launched on iOS and Android in Japan last July—Square Enix is officially shutting it down.
According to the company's update, service will conclude on May 9. Square Enix cites the difficulty of continuing to provide a satisfactory experience for players as the main reason behind the shutdown, and offered an apology along with thanks for all the support.
That may be the end of the main game, but Square Enix has some backup plans for the future. A Memorial Version is on the way to give players a chance to check out parts of the game, complete with the ability to carry over each player's name and birth date. It may not be the same as continuing the actual game, and no gameplay will be included, but it's something.
