Viz Releases Hardcover "The Drifting Classroom" Manga in Fall of 2019

Classic survival horror manga by Kazuo Umezu returns with a brand new translation

Fans of the gruesome and the macabre will be happy to know that Viz Media is releasing a deluxe new hardcover edition of The Drifting Classroom, an extremely influential survival horror manga from Kazuo Umezu, beginning in the Fall season of 2019. The new release will also feature an all-new translation.

Originally serialized from 1972 - 1974 in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday manga magazine, The Drifting Classroom was previously released in print by Viz Media and digitally by Comixology. The series has also been adapted into a live-action film in 1987 and a live-action TV drama in 2002. Viz describes the story of The Drifting Classroom as follows:

In the aftermath of a strange earthquake, an entire elementary school vanishes, leaving nothing but a hole in the ground. While parents mourn and authorities investigate, the students and teachers find themselves somewhere far away...somewhere cold and dark... a lifeless, nightmarish wasteland in which their school stands like a lone fortress. As panic turns to terror, as the rules start to fall apart, a sixth-grade boy named Sho and his friends must fight to survive in an alien world...
