It was the first feature film work for Hayao Miyazaki, who served as co-director for the second half of the first Lupin the Third TV anime series in 1971-1972, alongside the late Isao Takahata. The 100-minute film achieved a modest box office success with 610 million yen upon its initial release. However, it has been considered as one of the masterpieces in Japanese anime history.
