Tomohiko Ito (Sword art Online)'s original film "HELLO WORLD" debuted at a modest 6th
In its third weekend of September 21-22, the live-action film adaptation of Aka Akasaka's romantic comedy manga Kaguya-sama: Love Is War kept its second place for a second week in a row, earning 175 million yen on 143,000 admissions and bringing its domestic cume to a very good 1.5 billion yen.
Now it has become this year's fifth highest-grossing Japanese live-action film based on a Japanese manga, behind The Fable released in June with 1.8 billion yen, which was an adaptation of Katsuhisa Mimami's action comedy manga of the same name.
Makoto Shinkai's Weathering With You dropped one position down to fourth in its tenth weekend with 150 million yen from the 112,000 ticket sales. By September 23, the film had earned 13 billion yen, ranking 14th in the box office ranking in Japan of all-time, outgrossing Jurassic Park that made 12.85 billion yen in Japan in 1993.
However, it currently looks very difficult to reach the box office record of Hayao Miyazaki's 2013 film Kazetachinu/The Wind Rises (16.63 billion yen) to become the sixth top-grossing Japanese animation film of all-time, not to mention his own previous film in 2016, Kimi no Na wa/Your Name. (25.03 billion yen).
This weekend's only anime newcomer, Sword Art Online director Tomohiko Ito's original anime film HELLO WORLD was released in 254 theaters across Japan on September 20. The 98-minute film earned a modest 212 million yen on 156,000 admissions, ranking sixth in its opening weekend.
