The Makoto Shinkai directed film debuted at 3rd on the Chinese box office charts
While Weathering with You is still raking up the yen in Japan and finishing its theatrical run in Australia; the Makoto Shinkai directed film opened up in China over the past weekend and cleared the sky. From Friday, November 1 to Sunday, November 3, Weathering with You brought in 154 million yuan (US$21.92 million), reports Animation Business Journal, debuting third on the Chinese box office charts.
Shinkai's last film, Your Name opened in China and became the highest grossing anime film of all time – before being overtaken by Spirited Away and its Chinese run – thanks to the US$83 million brought into the box office, making China the second biggest market for the film after Japan. Your Name’s first weekend in the country brought in an unprecedented US$41 million, and going on to make 576 million yuan (US$83 million).
On its first weekend in China, Weathering with You passed Doraemon the Movie 2019: Nobita's Chronicle of the Moon Exploration and Detective Conan: Zero's Enforcer, to be the 8th highest grossing Japanese film in the country. Though, Weathering with You debuted lower than Your Name in China, and is performing lower in Japan as of its 11th week in theaters. In Australia/New Zealand, Weathering with You overtook the Your Name box office by bringing in US$931,000 compared to Your Name's US$899,000.
Weathering with You will open in the United States on January 17, with a Special Fan Preview event happening on January 15 and 16. Tickets go on sale on November 15.
