The commercial was made to promote their limited edition Japan-only Gratin Croquette Burgers
After teasing the tasty treat last week, McDonalds Japan finally released its wintery anime CM to promote the limited time ‘Gracoro’ burgers on its YouTube channel. The Japan-only Gratin Croquette Burgers started appearing in Japanese stores on December 4 and only last for a limited time.
The CM comes in a 30-second version (as seen above), and a 15-second version. It features the voice talents of ex-AKB48 center Atsuko Maeda and voice actors Ayana Taketatsu (Kirino Kosaka in Oreimo, Leafa in Sword Art Online) and Aimi (Kasumi Toyama in BanG Dream!, Sherry in Plastic Memories).
On a snowy Tokyo winters night, three girls who used to play lacrosse – which in Japanese features three of the same Katakana characters as ‘Gracoro’ – together in high school, meeting up at a fictionalized version of the Kabukicho McDonalds in Shinjuku. This was the same McDonalds that was also featured in Makoto Shinkai’s anime film, Weathering with You.
The campaign’s webpage also features audio dramas based on the characters from the CM as well as full versions of the songs by each of the voice actors. Both the normal Gratin Croquette Burger and the new Beef Demi Sauce Cheese Gratin Croquette Burger is currently on sale within Japan. Get in while they’re hot as they usually don’t last long...
The commercial was directed and storyboarded by Yoshihiro Kanno (animation director on Hunter x Hunter and Parasyte -the maxim-) at animation company G-angle. The three girls were designed by Kumiko Takayanagi (animation director on NEW GAME! and Mr. Osomatsu), who was also the animation director for the project. Tomoya Hosaka (photography on Attack on Titan, Love Live! Sunshine!!) from Asahi Production, was the Director of Photography, with Setsu Nagata on color design.
UPDATE: Added the production staff from G-angle.
