The special screenings on January 15 brought in over 1 million dollars!
After the long wait, North America finally got to watch the newest masterpiece from Makoto Shinkai, Weathering with You. While the film doesn’t open wide until January 17, GKIDS held special preview screenings on January 15 and 16 for fans to get that sweet scent of Shinkai before the full release.
While numbers for day two of the special screenings haven’t been released yet, the January 15 showings across North America have lifted the anime film to second place in the domestic box office chart. The anime film, on Wednesday, beat out Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Little Woman in its debut but under war film 1917. According to Box Office Mojo, Weathering with You brought in $1,586,217 over 1,019 screens, with an average of $1,556 per screen.
This brings Weathering with You to $178,598,863 worldwide at the box office. The film has so far had showings in China, South Korea, Australia, France, Spain, Russia, and more, outside of Japan.
Weathering with You opens wide in North American and the United Kingdom on January 17, showering everyone with that Shinkai goodness.
