The Makoto Shinkai film is the highest-grossing GKIDS-released film ever
Box Office Mojo released their weekend North American box office figures for the January 18, 19 and 20 Martin Luther King long weekend on January 19. Inside their article, they reported on the current estimated box office figures for the newly released Weathering With You anime film and how it stood over its first few days of being released wide in North America.
We reported earlier on January 19 that Weathering With You was on track to pass Your Name, already confirming a US$3 million two day debut for the film for the fan preview screenings. Box Office Mojo estimates that as of January 20, the first 6 days of release, Weathering With You will have brought in over US$5.05 million, surpassing that of Your Name, which grossed US$5.017 million during its entire North American run.
This also makes Weathering With You the highest-grossing film from GKIDS, bringing in double the amount than Hiromasa Yonebayashi's Mary and the Witch’s Flower in 2018.
Over the weekend – starting Friday – Weathering with You played in 486 locations across North America. Bringing in US$3,561 per screen over the three-day long weekend, or an average of US$1,187 per day, which has a per-screen average above Jumanji: The Next Level and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Though, due to the limited screens, the Makoto Shinkai film missed out on the top 10 over the weekend, averaging 13th place overall, just above the re-release of Jojo Rabbit, but below Parasite.
Weathering with You opened in Japan on July 19, and has so far made US$182 million at the worldwide box office. The anime film also opened in the United Kingdom on January 17.
