Weathering with You Anime Film Takes in US$3 Million in Fan Screenings in North America
Pushes the worldwide box office total up to US$180 million
Over January 15 and 16, Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering with You stormed North America by bringing in over US$3 million in the special fan screenings of the anime film. Fathom Events ran two days of fan screenings for the film before the wide release on January 17. On both days, the anime film was second in the domestic box office, over Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
At US$3 million, Weathering with You has already brought in over half of what Your Name did total back in 2017. Your Name grossed a total of US$5.017 million over its run in North American cinemas, with US$1.8 million of that over the opening weekend. If Weathering with You is on the same trajectory of making 2.787x the opening weekend (or in this case, opening weekend for Your Name, and first two days for Weathering with You), Weathering with You is poised to become the 10th highest-grossing anime film in North America, between Digimon The Movie and Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'.
With the box office takings from the first two days, Weathering with You has now brought in over US$180 million worldwide, keeping a steady 6th on the list of highest-grossing anime films worldwide, above Pokémon: The First Movie.
The estimated box office takings for January 17 – the first day of Weathering with You’s wide release – has been released without Weathering with You in the top 20, though we won’t know its final takings until the full weekend results are in after the long weekend in the United States. The anime film is currently being shown across North America in both subbed and dubbed formats.
