Makoto Shinkai's Weathering With You Wins Japan Academy Prize for "Animation of the Year"

RADWIMPS also receives the "Outstanding Achievement in Music" award

The Japan Academy Film Prize Association held the Grand Prize ceremony for the 43rd Japan Academy Prize in Tokyo last night and selected Makoto Shinkai's Tenki no Ko / Weathering With You as last year's "Animation of the Year" from the five nominees.

This is the first grand prize for the 47-year-old director. His previous film Kimi no Na wa. / Your Name.in 2016, which earned almost twice more box office gross than Weathering With You in Japan, won only the Best Screenplay Award. The year's "Animation of the Year" went to Sunao Katabuchi's WWII drama Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni / In This Corner of the World.

RADWIMPS, the four-member rock band who provided the theme/insert songs and soundtrack music for the film, also receives the "Outstanding Achievement in Music" award.

Shinkai says on Twitter, "At the Japan Academy Film Prize, RADWIMPS won the Outstanding Achievement in Music award, and 'Weathering With You' received Animation of the Year. Congratulations, RADWIMPS! Also, thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the staff who put effort into this film and the audience who supported us. I hope to see you again soon in my next film!"
