Hayao Miyazaki's How Do You Live? is currently still in the works
It's been a while since we were graced with a full-length feature film from the renowned Studio Ghibli. Last time one hit theaters was 2014's When Marnie Was There, directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, and the last film by Ghibli legend Hayao Miyazaki was 2013's The Wind Rises. Unless you've been following the news closely over the past few years, you might be wondering, along with many others, when does the next Ghibli movie come out?
While there's still no release date, the next Ghibli movie is coming from none other than Hayao Miyazaki, who is cooking up How Do You Live? at his own pace. Here's what we know about this one so far…
What is How Do You Live?
Miyazaki's current project pulls its title from that of Genzaburo Yoshino's 1937 book How Do You Live?, or Kimi-tachi wa Dou Ikiru ka, which plays a big role in the life of the film's protagonist. Not much more has been divulged, but the original novel the protagonist holds so dear is all about the relationship between a man named Koperu and his uncle, and the way we live as humans.
When Does How Do You Live Release?
This is an even trickier question. The last notable update on the project came about when actor Takeru Sato visited Studio Ghibli to interview producer Toshio Suzuki and director Hayao Miyazaki. During the interview, Miyazaki commented on his retirement, saying he really did retire after The Wind Rises, but "just wanted to do it again."
As for How Do You Live?, Suzuki told Sato that, after working on the movie for three and a half years, progress was at about 15 percent complete. At the time of this story—which we posted back in December of 2019—that meant they were only drawing about one minute of footage a month for Miyazaki's latest. Compare that to Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke in 1997, which they were able to produce at a rate of about five minutes of footage a month.
Considering the fact that this interview only took place around the end of 2019, it's safe to say How Do You Live? isn't that much further along in production. They've been cranking out less than five percent of footage a year, so even if we're being generous, one would assume they're hovering somewhere under or around 20 percent. It also helps to keep in mind that Ghibli is operating with no deadline for How Do You Live?, so there really are no expectations at the moment.
Is Kimi-tachi wa Dou Ikiru ka All Ghibli is Working On?
Apparently not! The year kicked off with a New Year's illustration from Ghibli, depicting the Year of the Rat. At the same time, the studio looked back at the previous year and took the opportunity to let fans know what they're working on. In addition to the in-progress Studio Ghibli theme park and digital releases of the Ghibli catalog, the studio mentioned two films currently in production.
We know even less about that second film. It could be a short, or it could be, well, anything! We'll have to stay tuned for more information, and we'll be sure to keep an eye out for the next opportunity to check in on the production of Hayao Miyazaki's How Do You Live?.
