Sailor Moon Redraw Is the Best Outlet for Creativity on Japanese Twitter in 2020

When Japan Twitter discovers a year old meme, you know you're in for a treat

#SailorMoonRedraw has been floating around the internet for a while now, getting quite large on Instagram, Tumblr, and Twitter in West, but it seems over the last weekend Japanese Twitter discovered the meme and woo girl, did they Magical Girl Make up!

From doujin artists to manga creators (like Pop Team Epic creator Bkub Okawa), and even animators, character designers (like Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 character designer Ilya Kuvshinov) and directors (like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure animation director Kohei Ashiya) jumped on the chance to recreate a famous frame from the influential anime series, which is seeing the next Sailor Moon Crystal entry, Sailor Moon Eternal, coming out in Japanese cinemas later this year on September 11.

The original image comes from Episode 125 of the original Sailor Moon TV anime series (in Sailor Moon S), which is credited to Ikuko Itoh for the character designs and being the chief animation director on that section of the franchise at Toei Animation.
