This is on par with the launch window of the PS4
During Sony's quarterly earnings report, the Japanese conglomerate released the first sales figures for the hard to find PlayStation 5, as well as the hottest title on the console, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, showing that despite the new game console unable to be in the hands of everyone who wants one, the PS5 launch is on par with that of the PlayStation 4.
Since the PlayStation 5 released, the console has sold 4.5 million units up to December 31, which is slightly above the 4.1 million consoles the PlayStation 4 sold in the same period when it launched in 2013. This is significant, as not only is demand incredibly high for the console, but Sony cannot keep up production. AMD, one of the key suppliers of the Zen 2 CPUs that powers the core of the PS5 revealed that shortages of the consoles, along with its current-gen sibling, will continue into late 2021.
Sony expects to sell more than 7.6 million consoles by the end of March–the end of the Japanese financial year–and then more than doubling that goal to 14.8 million consoles in the 2021 fiscal year, though production may hinder those plans more than demand.
On the software side of the controller, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which released on both the PS4 and PS5 in November, sold a decent 4.1 million copies over both consoles, bringing the webhead into many new homes. 1.5 million new people signed up to PlayStation Plus (which gave 20 free blockbuster games to PS5 users through the PlayStation Plus Collection benefit) for a total of 47.4 million subscribers.
Like Nintendo, Sony's PlayStation division continues to do well keeping us entertained while we're staying at home, and with so much more to come from the PlayStation 5, if people can get their hands on it that is, it seems 2021 will be good for the Japanese gaming company.
