In true Gintama fashion, he's both younger and older than one might expect!
The original editor of Gintama at Weekly Shonen Jump revealed the true age of Gintoki last night during a special live-stream for the Gintama: THE FINAL anime film. Kohei Onishi, who has also edited for One Piece, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, and is also currently the editor-in-chief of media at Jump, recalled back when Gintama started serialization in Jump, he asked Hideaki Sorachi how old Gintoki was.
According to Onishi, Sorachi replied that at the start of the manga series, Gintoki was 27 years old. This means during the events of Gintama: THE FINAL, the leader of Yorozuya is 29 years old. Japanese fans were surprised at Gin's age, which for a Shonen Jump protagonist is quite older than the average ages of Jump heroes.
