Akira Toriyama whipped up a new story along with character designs and more
This year's Goku Day celebration is going full Super Saiyan—hey, it's already 5/9 in Japan!—because Toei Animation just revealed plans for a new Dragon Ball Super movie. Featuring a brand-new story by Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, who also provided character designs and even wrote lines of the script, the movie is currently scheduled to premiere sometime in 2022.
Akira Toriyama shared a message to Dragon Ball fans around the world:
It's now been 37 years since the launch of Toriyama's original Dragon Ball manga. Following the events of the Dragon Ball Super TV anime, the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie went on to become a smash hit when it was released in 2018, setting a worldwide box office record of over $120 million.
Planning for the 2022 Dragon Ball Super movie actually kicked off back in 2018 before Broly was even out in theaters. While details are light, this one aims to tell a "large-scale story" building on the enthusiastic response from the previous film.
Stay tuned for more on this one in the coming months!
