Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Becomes the 10th Highest-Grossing Anime Film in Japan With 9.33 Billion Yen at JP Box Office

New theatrical gifts given out to filmgoers in “final” weeks

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

Evangelion has finally broken the AT Field of the Top 10 highest-grossing anime films with the “final” film Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time topping 9.33 billion yen at the Japanese box office as of its 105th day in theaters. This coming Saturday will also see more theatrical benefits given out for the film as it wraps up its theatrical run.

Spoiler-filled trailer:

As of June 20, Evangelion 3.0+1.0’s 105th day in theaters in Japan, the film has pushed past 9.33 billion yen (US$85.06 million), and becoming the 10th highest-grossing anime film at the Japanese box office, pushing out Arrietty’s 9.25 billion yen (US $89.97 million) box office gross. Note that the conversion rates of the Japanese yen and American dollar have fluctuated over the years; the rankings are based on the domestic yen.

On the full Japanese box office chart, Evangelion 3.0+1.0 now ranks 49, ahead of Code Blue: The Movie at 93 billion yen (US$84.22 million) and below Star Wars: Attack of the Clones at 93.5 billion yen (around US$78.18 million). The next highest-grossing anime film on the charts is 2019s Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire with 9.37 billion yen (US$91.14 million).

If Evangelion 3.0+1.0 keeps up the steady pace at the box office, it could easily get to the 10 billion yen milestone, but is unlikely to pass The Wind Rises’ 12.02 billion yen (US$116.9 million) box office gross.

Due to COVID-19 and the third State of Emergency that closed down cinemas in Japan, several of the theatrical gifts was postponed for Evangelion 3.0+1.0. Now that theaters have re-opened, two gifts have been previewed featuring Mari and Kaworu (above). The distribution will be limited to 1 million copies of both posters, randomly given out to moviegoers.
