ICO Celebrates 20 Years with Video Looking At Its Early Development

See how Fumito Ueda's breakthrough game looked prior to its 2001 debut

ICO

When ICO was released for PlayStation 2, it put director Fumito Ueda on the map and had everyone eagerly anticipating all of the next projects from him and his team, from Shadow of the Colossus in 2005 to The Last Guardian in 2016. ICO first touched down on December 6, 2001, and genDESIGN is marking the 20th anniversary with a peek at how the game looked in its early stages of development.

According to genDESIGN, this particular video was made around 1998 to share the concept of the game with the development team. They explained that the video was a breakthrough for the team, who—along with director Ueda—were "groping in the dark, not knowing what kind of game ICO would become."
