JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 Has 2nd Biggest 3-Day Opening Weekend in Japanese Box Office History

The film made over 1 billion yen on the anime film's first day

This weekend at the Japanese box office belonged to JUJUTSU KAISEN 0, which overtook cinemas with millions of fans parading through its halls to watch the prequel to the hit TV anime series, giving it the second-biggest opening weekend in Japanese box office history. Toho, the film's producer and distributor, released how much the film made over the weekend and how many people saw the Yuta Okkotsu-led film.

Before we get into the records JUJUTSU KAISEN broke, Toho also released the character settings of a few more familiar characters who appear in JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 who weren't in the original manga story but do appear in the film in certain situations.

Over the entire weekend, JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 made 2,694,128,150 yen (US$23,546,058) on the back of 1,908,053 tickets sold. This gives JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 the title of second-biggest three-day opening weekend in Japanese box office history, only behind 2020's Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train. This feat is bigger than anyone could have imagined for JUJUTSU KAISEN, as just a year ago it was unknown if any film would come close to Mugen Train this decade.

While JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 didn't meet Toho's estimations on Friday of 1 million tickets sold, it was the second film ever to make over 1 billion yen on its opening day at the Japanese box office (after Demon Slayer), making 1,072,252,950 yen (US$9,370,901) on the back of 772,224 tickets sold. This number also includes the midnight previews on Friday morning, which saw the film screen to sold-out showings on 58 screens in 14 theaters in 7 major cities across Japan. This gave the film the second-biggest opening day in Japanese box office history based on revenue.

The parade continued on Saturday with 626,110 people going to see JUJUTSU KAISEN 0, making 892,008,700 yen (US$7,796,646). Sunday saw fewer people parading, with 509,719 people coming in to watch the film as a majority of Japan was blanketed under a snowstorm, making 729,866,500 yen (US$6,379,478). This gave the film the second-biggest opening weekend Saturday and Sunday since 2015.

At this time, it is almost certain that JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 will meet Toho's 10 billion yen goal for the film. Where it'll stop is anyone's guess right now with how many fans came out over the opening weekend to see the film, and if they'll go back to see it again and again.

MAPPA returns to animate JUJUTSU KAISEN 0, with director Sunghoo Park at the helm and Toho distributing the film in theaters in Japan across 418 theaters, including 39 IMAX theaters. The anime film was announced at the end of the JUJUTSU KAISEN TV anime series, which is streaming on Crunchyroll.
