Demon Slayer, JUJUTSU KAISEN lead the top 10
It seems nothing can beat Tanjiro’s Nichirin Sword, or the antics of Tokyo Jujutsu High. Out of the entire landscape of streaming services in Japan, anime continues to be the most-watched content in the country, beating out the likes of Squid Game, WandaVision, and many more series that have become worldwide sensations over 2021.
GEM Partners, who publish a report every month on the most popular content on Japanese subscription streaming services, found which franchises were the most popular for 2021 by asking around 7,000 people each week for an entire year between the ages of 15 and 69 what they watched in the past week. Note that these rankings would include live-action franchises if they ranked high enough.
The top 10 most-streamed shows in Japan in 2021 are:
- 10. Kingdom
- 9. One Piece
- 8. Evangelion
- 7. My Hero Academia
- 6. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
- 5. Case Closed
- 4. Attack on Titan
- 3. Tokyo Revengers
- 2. JUJUTSU KAISEN
- 1. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

The first live-action series to rank in the top 30 is the Japanese series Solitary Gourmet at 12th place, with The Walking Dead being the first international live-action series at 15th place. The worldwide sensation Squid Game topped viewership on Netflix but overall came 16th in the full rankings.
