What are The Crunchyroll Anime Awards?

The Crunchyroll Anime Awards is a celebration of Japan’s amazing medium made possible by the world’s most passionate community. Now entering its fourth year, the Anime Awards’ commitment to commemorating the best of the best is stronger than ever!

There are several parts to the Anime Awards, including a fan voting period and a live award show that will be streamed on February 15, 2020 at 5PM PST. Be sure to mark your calendars to tune in and see this show’s winners!

How can I be a part of the Anime Awards?

During the voting period of the Anime Awards, fans have the opportunity to make their voice heard! Get ready to cast your vote in categories such as Best Boy, Best Girl, Best Director, and Anime of the Year. After voting ends, be sure to tune into the Anime Awards show hosted live from Crunchyroll’s headquarters in San Francisco on February 15, 2020 at 5PM PST.

How are the winners selected?

Winners will be selected after judges and fans have completed voting. The winner of each category is the one that receives the most votes, with a 70/30 weighted split between judge votes and fan votes. Judges will serve as tiebreakers in the event of any ties.

When will the winners be announced?

Winners will be announced during the Anime Awards show, streamed live on February 15, 2020 at 5PM PST. Visit How to Watch for more information.

How do we select judges?

Judges are industry experts hand-selected based on their reputation, regard, and credibility. Our judges come from a range of different backgrounds, cultures, and careers, which we think best represents the diversity of anime fandom.

How are categories selected?

Crunchyroll selects categories for the Anime Awards based on fan popularity over the past years. Crunchyroll also creates categories based on fan feedback.

How are nominees selected?

Nominees are selected by the Anime Awards judges. Judges are provided a list of potential nominees for each category, which they narrow down over two rounds of voting to produce a final list of six nominees.

How did you define each category?

Anime of the Year

Any anime that follows the following criteria is eligible for this category: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best Boy

Any character is eligible given that the anime it comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best Girl

Any character is eligible given that the anime it comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best Protagonist

Any character is eligible given that the anime it comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best Antagonist

Any character is eligible given that the anime it comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best Director

Any director is eligible given that the anime it comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best Character Design

Any character design is eligible given that the anime it comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best Animation

Any anime that follows the following criteria is eligible for this category: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best Score

Any anime that follows the following criteria is eligible for this category: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best Fight Scene

Any anime that follows the following criteria is eligible for this category: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best Couple

Any characters are eligible given that the anime it comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best Comedy

Any anime that follows the following criteria is eligible for this category: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best Drama

Best Fantasy

Best Opening Sequence

Any Opening Sequence (OP) is eligible given that the anime it comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best Ending Sequence

Any Ending Sequence (ED) is eligible given that the anime it comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best VA Performance (JP)

Any voice actor whose performance was in Japanese is eligible given that the anime that the role was from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019.

Best VA Performance (EN)

Any voice actor whose performance was in English is eligible given that the anime that the role was from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2019, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2019, e) the anime had an English dub produced in 2019.
