Do I need a Crunchyroll account to vote? Do I need to log in to vote?

You do not need a Crunchyroll account to vote. You only need a free or Premium account if you wish to enter the giveaway. New to Crunchyroll? Click here to create an account if you would like to enter.

How does voting work?

Click the category you wish to vote in, then click “Vote” underneath your pick. That’s it!

When does voting open? When does voting close?

Voting opens on January 11, 2019 at 12:00 AM PST and closes on January 18, 2019 at 11:59 PM PST. All categories will open simultaneously and close simultaneously.

How are the winners selected?

Winners will be selected after judges and fans have completed voting, sometime following January 18. The winner of each category is the one that receives the most votes, with a 50/50 weighted split between judge votes and fan votes. Judges will serve as tiebreakers in the event of any ties.

When will the winners be announced?

Winners will be announced in a live stream on February 16, 2019 at 6 PM PST from San Francisco.

How did we pick our judges?

Judges are industry experts hand-selected based on their reputation, regard, and credibility. Our judges come from a range of different backgrounds, cultures, and careers, which we think best represents the diversity of anime fandom. We are honored to welcome back past Anime Awards judges, along with newcomers to the roster. Learn more about our judges here.

How do judges pick the nominees?

Judges are provided a list of potential nominees for each category, which they narrow down over two rounds of voting to produce a final list of 6 nominees to be posted on crunchyroll.com/animeawards.

How did we pick the categories?

We chose nominees based on fan popularity over the past two years. We also created categories based on a high volume of fan feedback.

How did you define each category? How did you pick nominees for each category?

Anime Awards nominees are defined as an animated show or movie, primarily produced in Japan, that aired during the year of 2018. Each category can be summed up thusly:

  • Best Protagonist

    Any character is eligible given that the anime it comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2018, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2018.

  • Best Antagonist

    Any character is eligible given that the anime is comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2018, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2018.

  • Best Boy

    Any character is eligible given that the anime is comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2018, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2018.

  • Best Girl

    Any character is eligible given that the anime is comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2018, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2018.

  • Best Opening Sequence (OP)

    Any Opening Sequence (OP) is eligible given that the anime it comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2018, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2018.

  • Best Ending Sequence (ED)

    Any Ending Sequence (ED) is eligible given that the anime is comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2018, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2018.

  • Best Performance by a VA (Japanese)

    Any voice actor whose performance was in Japanese is eligible given that the anime that the role was from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2018, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2018.

  • Best Performance by a VA (English)

    Any voice actor whose performance was in English is eligible given that the anime that the role was from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2018, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2018, e) the anime had an English dub produced in 2018.

  • Best Director

    Any director is eligible given that the anime is comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2018, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2018.

  • Best Animation

    Any anime that follows the following criteria is eligible for this category: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2018, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2018.

  • Best Film

    Any film that adheres to the following criteria is eligible for this category: a) the film is animated, b) primary production for the film took place in Japan, c) was distributed in theaters in Japan, d) had its initial non-festival US theatrical release during 2018, e) was distributed in at least 25 theaters in the United States.

  • Best Character Design

    Any character design is eligible given that the anime is comes from meets the following criteria: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2018, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2018.

  • Anime of the Year

    Any anime that follows the following criteria is eligible for this category: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2018, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2018.

  • Best Fight Scene

    [ ] This category is sponsored by Capcom, and its nominees were determined by a team of Ellation editorial staff at the behest of the sponsor. Any scene containing a fight from an anime that follows the following criteria is eligible for this category: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2018, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during 2018.

  • Best Continuing Series

    [ ] This category is sponsored by VRV, and its nominees were determined by a team of Ellation editorial staff at the behest of the sponsor. Any anime that follows the following criteria is eligible for this category: a) an animated series, b) primary production for the title took place in Japan, c) was broadcast on television or online in Japan, at least in part, during 2018, d) at least one episode received initial legal distribution in the United States of America during both 2017 and 2018.
