Flow Hates Heights, Loves Clam Chowder, and Wants to Sing the Opening for Laid-Back Camp

The band behind your favorite Naruto themes answers questions at Anime Boston!

Even if you don’t know the name Flow, chances are their music defined childhood. After forming in 1998, the multi-genre group has shown up all over hit anime, performing some of the most iconic opening and ending themes of the past 20 years. You’ll definitely recognize their song Go!!!, from Naruto’s 4th OP (the “fighting dreamers” one), as well as it’s 8th OP Re:Member and Shippuden’s 6th OP Sign. They’re also responsible for the 1st and 2nd Code Geass OPs, Colors and World End and have made music for Eureka Seven, The Seven Deadly Sins, Durarara!!X2, and several installments of the Tales series of video games. They showed up at Anime Boston 2018 to perform a concert on site and hosted a panel the next day to answer some of their fans burning questions!

What do you enjoy most about coming to America and performing before an American audience?

Keigo: American audiences are kind of just a giant plasma ball of energy. Every single time we come back to America we experience that energy and it’s always a lot of fun.

What’s it like collaborating with other artists from Japan and how is it different from creating on your own?

Kohshi: It almost feels impossible. Any kind of collaborations with other artists are.

Keigo: The difference is that there’s more singers.

I’d like to hear what your favorite anime are. (Each of the answers are accompanied by cheers)

Got’s: I would love to keep naming all the anime we’ve worked on, but if I had to pick one I really like Zeta Gundam.

Iwasaki: I’ve been watching this particular series 15 years now called Detective Conan.

Keigo: My favorite probably Dragon Ball. I even watched all the recent episodes of Dragon Ball Super right up to the end. I love it.

Kohshi: My favorite anime is Evangelion.

Take: Naruto.

How did you decide on the name Flow?

Kohshi: Flow in this case means to flow like a river and water that flows never rots, it never goes bad, so we wanted the image that we’ll never rot, we’ll always be fresh.

What's your favorite line from one of your songs?

Keigo: From the song Re:Member. From the very beginning all the lines in that song I’m very very fond of, but it’s a little bit deeper for me because I was involved in a car accident and during my recovery we couldn’t do any live concerts and take a break. The first song we came out with after the car accident was Re:Member so every line in it is deeply meaningful for me.

What were some of your first impressions of each other?

Take: Actually the very last person to join the band was Iwasaki. The first time I met him he had art all over his body, so I thought “oh, this guy is really scary” however he ended up being incredibly funny and probably the person who I get along with the best.

What is your favorite non-anime song you’ve performed?

Keigo: There’s a song I’m not sure if you’re familiar with called Ryuusei during there song there is a line that say “no matter the distance we're always connected” and to me every time I perform it in a concert that’s what I mean, no matter if you’re in America or Brazil, no matter where you’re from, we’re all connected.

Are any times when the producer has a wild idea and you guys just have to, y’know, flow with it?

Got’s: I have two things that, no matter what, I will always say no to. One is heights and the other is nudity. Although in the music video for Go!!! I appear with no clothes and… that’s fine.

Have you ever been on any prank shows?

Iwasaki: A TV crew snuck into my house while I was out and made the inside into a jungle. After it aired, I had so many bugs…

If you could be in any anime which one would you be in?

Take: I would like to be in Doraemon, specifically so I can have a little bamboo helicopter to fly around and a little door that can take me anywhere so I can visit Boston whenever I want.

Is there any anime you’d like to make music for?

Take: Laid-Back Camp. I’d like to take over as the theme song singer from Asaka.

If you could become a food, which food would you become?

Got’s: Clam chowder. I’ve had it three times since I arrived here.
