  • Original Boogiepop anime was a bit better
"Boogiepop Phantom" was one of my favorite anime from back in the day, so I was excited to see CrunchyRoll picked this series up. The colorists in this show really outdid themselves in a few of the scenes. But I think the art style itself betrays the dark tones of the show; it's not.. serious/mature enough. The original series was more of a seinen/adult-style. This is still a great series though ...

    Absolutely Painful to Watch
First let me say this, I enjoy this genre, and I don't mind slow burn shows at all. But I struggled to make it through the first part, it felt like it took an hour and I was constantly checking the timer wondering if I should even bother with the rest of the episode praying that something of any interest would happen.

The characters were booooooring, no one had anything interesting or useful to ...

    What is going on here?
After watching the first two episodes, my feeling is "bizarre with can't-be-bothered art, and confusing." I will watch a few more episodes to see if my impression remains the same. It isn't uninteresting, but "BoogiePop" may belong to that class of anime which requires a second viewing, "Darker than Black" comes to mind. Maybe I am watching a masterpiece and am too much of a troglodyte to ...

Shifting perspectives, not for casual viewing
The most important thing to know about Boogiepop is that the plot utilizes changes in perspectives and very subtle clues. This can make it difficult to follow the nuances of the world and plot without some effort. It's not light viewing. Once you begin to understand the ways in which the characters are connected, along with the incidents they are connected to, it begins to unfold.
    The story is ...

A strange title but the show isn't bad.
The premise of the show isn't bad. The problem is twofold: The writing isn't there to prop up the cliché theme. The art is flimsy and relies on CGI while being mediocre. It's better than Berserk, but it doesn't deliver the gruesome scenery Berserk did. So, we have classic cerebral horror with poor writing creating a cheap mystery.

High school girls are disappearing, so Boogiepop comes to save ...
