Are you folks ready for the endless anime attractions of this weekend’s Crunchyroll Expo? Well, even if you think you are prepared, get ready for a rattling of those preparations, as we break down all the various anime productions that will be premiering this very weekend. A full month ahead of the fall season, you’ll get to see the first episodes of totally new productions like the novel isekai Ascendance of a Bookworm, fan favorites like Chihayafuru, and others, along with screenings of terrific films like Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms and a Dragon Ball Z double feature. Let’s break down all the screenings that shouldn’t be missed over the weekend events!

Somali and the Forest Spirit World Premiere

First off, we’ve got the world premiere of a dazzling new fantasy series, Somali and the Forest Spirit. Based on a beautiful manga by Yako Gureishi, Somali is being directed by the talented Kenji Yasuda, and features a star-studded vocal cast as well. Though it’ll be streaming on Crunchyroll come January, this weekend will offer a special chance to check out its first episode, six months ahead of schedule!


The Wonderland U.S. Premiere

Next up, we’ll be hosting the United States premiere of the latest film by Keiichi Hara, the brilliant director behind such films as Colorful and Miss Hokusai. The Wonderland centers on a young girl named Akane, who finds herself spirited away into a fantastical realm, and told it is her destiny to save this place as the “Green Goddess.” I adored Hara’s Miss Hokusai, and can’t wait to see what visions he brings to life in his latest fantastical production.



The Island of Giant Insects U.S. Premiere & A Talk with Producer Tatsuya Ishiguro

Friday will also see the United States' premiere of The Island of Giant Insects, where you can get a first look at Crunchyroll's horror anime co-production! Along with a screening of the OVA, this event will feature a talk with show producer Tatsuya Ishiguro, where you can learn more about the series before it heads to Crunchyroll this winter. This event is 18+, and IDs will be checked at the door.

 

BLACKFOX World Premiere
