Project staff apologizes to the fans for the delay and asks for their continued support
Some sad news for all you competitive karuta fans out there: the third season of Chihayafuru, the TV anime adaptation based on the manga by Yuki Suetsugu about a young lady striving to reach the top as a competitive karuta player, has been delayed from its original broadcast period in April of 2019 and rescheduled for a new broadcast period beginning in October of 2019.
In an official statement, the staff of Chihayafuru Season 3 cited a desire to deliver the best work possible, apologized to the fans for the delay, and thanked the fans for their continued support.
The original Chihayafuru manga is serialized in Kodansha's Be Love josei manga magazine. An English language version of the manga is available from Kodansha Comics, and Crunchyroll currently streams the first two seasons of the Chihayafuru TV anime. Crunchyroll describes the story of Chihayafuru as follows:
Chihaya Ayase has spent most of her life supporting her sister’s model career. When she meets a boy named Arata Wataya, he thinks Chihaya has potential to become a great karuta player. As Chihaya dreams of becoming Japan's best karuta player, she is soon separated from her karuta playing friends. Now in high school, Chihaya still plays karuta in the hope that she will one day meet her friends again.
Chihayafuru Season 3 is directed by Morio Asaka and features animation production by Madhouse. The series will broadcast on Nippon TV as part of the "AnichU" programming block beginning in October of 2019.
