Materia Collective Gets Heavy with Shadow of the Colossus Symphonic Metal Cover Album

Argentian composer Ferdk cooks up 11 tracks inspired by Kow Otani's timeless soundtrack

Material Collective, a Seattle-based video game music publisher and label, is exploring a unique audio landscape with Battle With the Colossus, a cover album that re-imagines Kow Otani's timeless soundtrack for Shadow of the Colossus in the genre of symphonic heavy metal.

The album features cover artwork (above) by Leo Lembotiv and 11 tracks produced by Argentian composer Ferdk, including:

  • "Revived Power"
  • "The Opened Way"
  • "In Awe of the Power"
  • "A Messenger from Behind"
  • "A Violent Encounter"
  • "Liberated Guardians"
  • "Gatekeeper of the Castle Ruins"
  • "A Despair-filled Farewell"
  • "Counterattack"
  • "Final Battle"
  • "The Farthest Land"

Describing his work on the album, Ferdk states: "Battle with the Colossus embodies the duality of conflict versus beauty [...] Guitar riffs challenge the beasts. Orchestral melodies capture their majesty. I vividly remember encountering the very first colossus, way back in 2005. I was in awe, I hadn't seen something like this in gaming before. I found myself climbing this huge beast as the score charged into a triumphant orchestral epic, a one-of-a-kind experience. The soundtrack to this game is almost like a character of its own. It defines the experience just as much as the art direction and gameplay. It's truly a masterpiece of a game and one of my all-time favorites, so I'm pleased to be able to release my tribute to the game and its soundtrack."

Battle With the Colossus is available now for purchase on music platforms such as iTunesAmazon, and Bandcamp, and it can also be sampled via streaming services such as Pandora and Spotify.
