Taika Waititi's adaptation is officially moving forward
It seems like every six months or so the wheels start rolling once more on the live-action Akira adaptation. Now, in perhaps the most substantial move yet, Warner Bros. has locked in an official release date for May 21, 2021.
Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is still in place as director for the Hollywood's take on Katsuhiro Otomo's classic manga and anime film, which has Leonardo DiCaprio producing with Andrew Lazar through the former's Appian Way company.
Akira has been a news topic ever since Crunchyroll News has been around, so it's near and dear to our hearts! Garrett Hedlund was supposed to star back in 2012, and a handful of different actors and directors have run their way through the revolving doors of the adaptation since then. For now, we'll have to wait and see how Waititi's version turns out.
