Japan Box Office: Godzilla: King of the Monsters Roars with 677 Million Yen Opening

"LUPIN THE ⅢRD: Fujiko's Lie" tops the mini theater ranking

Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the highly anticipated third installment of Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse franchise featuring the fierce kaiju battle among Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah, released in 362 theaters (431 screens) across Japan on March 31, dominating its first weekend with 677 million yen on 479,000 admissions. The two-day opening gross was 133.1% of the franchise's first installment Godzilla in 2014 and 108.3% of the last Japanese Godzilla film Shin Godzilla in 2016.

The 132-minute film made 919 million yen from its firs three days from Friday through Sunday. Considering its mixed reviews and word of mouth (mainly due to its confusing plot and weak human drama), it is expected to end its theatrical run in Japan with around 4 billion yen, about a half of Shin Godzilla's.

The live-action film based on Kaiji Kawaguchi (Silent Service, Zipang)'s latest military manga Kubo Ibuki (Aircraft Carrier Ibuki) dropped to third from its opening weekend's second, bringing its total domestic gross to 730 million yen. Kingdom in sixth place had earned 5.16 billion yen, while The 23rd Detective Conan feature film Konjou no Fist/The Fist of Blue Sapphire in eighth had crossed 8.78 billion yen.

The winner in the mini theater ranking was LUPIN THE ⅢRD Mine Fujiko no Uso/Fujiko's Lie, the third installment of the "LUPIN THE ⅢRD" series featuring each main character of the Lupin The Third franchise in more hardcore and violent way, following LUPIN THE ⅢRD: Daisuke Jigen's Gravestone (2014) and LUPIN THE ⅢRD: The Blood Spray of Goemon Ishikawa (2017).
