Weathering With You Slightly Surpasses Your Name's Opening Day Gross

Makoto Shinkai's new film has 147 more screens than his previous one

Makoto Shinkai's highly-anticipated new feature film Tenki no Ko/Weathering With You was finally released in 359 theaters with 448 screens in Japan on July 19, 2019.

According to distributor Toho, its opening day gross was 118% of that of his previous film Kimi no Na wa./Your Name. released on August 26, 2016. Both films were released on Friday, and most of Japanese public schools ended their first semester yesterday.

In its opening weekend, Weathering With You is released in 63 more theaters  (21% more) and has 147 more screens (49% more) than Your Name. did. So we can assume the former's per theater/screen average is less than the latter's (and the serious effect from the Kyoto Animation incident on the day before definitely can't be denied). Let's see how the film will carry out over the weekend.
