Do yourself a favour and watch this series. You might have heard it being referred to as "KICK-ASS the anime" but it so much more than that. It manages to work on so many levels - as a lighthearted tale of heroes, a serious story of justice and morals, as well as a parody of mainstream superheroes. It's funny, charming, absurd, but oddly mature in many ways - it's one of the most weirdly satisfying roller-coaster rides I've ever been on.
The characters are the element that really shines in this series. They are incredibly lovable, and they suck you into their struggles immediately. It's incredibly easy to get invested in the main character (Masayoshi Hazama a.k.a Samurai Flamenco)'s story, because he's just so innocent and earnest in his beliefs, and it's interesting to see his outlook mature and grow throughout the series. No matter how many absurd twists and turns the story makes (trust me, it's a ridiculous amount) the characters are the ones that have you sticking with it until the end. Which you should definitely do.
Fair warning - the series goes through many abrupt and odd changes in tone (read: the level of realism takes a sudden nosedive and you're left struggling to catch up as it descends into ridiculousness) - but I encourage any viewer to just to sit back and let themselves be dragged along for this crazy ride instead of sitting there dazed. I'll admit that I almost stopped watching it because some of the writing choices didn't make much sense to me, but I'm really glad I made it to the end - I promise that all the sudden changes are deliberate and will later be explained. The shifts in the story seem to totally come out of a left field, but no matter how strange it gets, I encourage you to follow it through its ups and downs because it is so{/i} worth it. Give Samurai Flamenco a chance!
