So much heart, such a compelling story.
Utterly human characters believable, loveable, hateable, flawed and so beautifully real, The pacing is slow so don't expect a murder every week, or a magic mech level up every episode. The female lead is so strong and feminine, not a ball-breaker carrying a sword. Its so refreshing to see strength portrayed this way.
This is a work of art about an art form, told lovingly.
    Played against a ...

Captivating story not just about rakugo but also about life
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju is absolutely one of the finest anime I have ever had the pleasure of watching.

The rakugo performances perfectly encapsulate the characters and reflect on the story but its the underlying narrative that will hook you with many mature themes and human relationships, as our main characters try to deal with the fast changing world of rakugo and their own personal ...

    Masterful visual storytelling
I am right now on my hands and knees begging you, give this one a shot!
The music is fantastic and the animation, though simple, only enhances the stories told by the artists and the voice actors really take the gold star here bringing the characters so much personality and vitality. The background plot and drama behind the characters is compelling and interesting, every episode will go by way ...

Masterfully told anime about a subject you probably don't know
After hearing a highly positive review of this anime in relation to Crunchyroll's anime awards, I knew I had to have a look to see what the fuss was about.
I recently binge watched this show in a day and already I regret going through it so fast (although I am pacing myself through s2)
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju is a masterfully told and beautiful anime about a subject I knew nothing about but ...

  • A rare gem of a show
An incredible anime that will break your heart and then piece it back together. Very much character-driven, with a very interesting, warm cast of characters. I enjoyed learning about rakugo in such an accessible format. The quality of voice acting is insanely good.
    Please give it a watch!

  • An incredible, well written storyline
Where do I even start with this one?

From the very start, you simply fall into the story of the show. The writers have really outdone themselves on this one. The pacing is immaculate, the timing impeccable, and the story believable. It's obvious that the writers have set out to avoid the tropes and cliches that many animes fall into. In this, they have additionally avoided the pitfall of the ...

  • Fantastic story with great character development!
I was very impressed by the story and animation. The anime dealt with mature themes and issues. It also did a wonderful job portraying the characters.

The reason why this series has resonated so strongly with me is, similar to in Rakugo, it's the catharsis that develops with the audience.

I am very eager to watch Season II as I've browsed through the raw manga to get the gist of what's ...

  • Not perfect but plenty interesting, made with sincerity and passion
I did enjoy this and in the later episodes in particular the visual storytelling is pushed in really subtle and meaningful ways. My problem with this is the main female character, which is a disappointment because I feel all the male characters in this are incredibly well written and explored. She is originally fleshed out at the start fairly well, but towards the end it feels more like she is ...

  • Slow But Outstanding!
Although starting slowly in the first episode this show is one of my favourites. Very rich plot, feels train, and also I lots of smaller stories inside when each rakugo is performed. This isn't an anime you click on because you are bored and looking for something to watch, it's too slow for that. If you want to engage in a compelling story however this is definately the show for you

  • Flawed but a beautiful and compelling story
The story is rather simple. It features Yakumo, Sukeroku and Yotarou, three men binded together by the decaying Rakugo scene. However, the writing is impeccable and more than makes up for the simple story, giving us a genuine exploration through its myriad of themes -- gender fluidity, love, feminism, poverty, contemporary and traditional art, progressivism and the plight of increasing consumerism ...
