Yakuza Video Game Producer Wants to Make a "Completely Different Sonic" Game

Maybe we'll see the Blue Hedgehog speed through Kabukicho?

Sonic the Movie

For the 60th anniversary of SEGA, the Japanese video game company has been posting a series of interviews with big names in the SEGA family, including one with Daisuke Sato, the producer for the Yakuza series at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. While most of the interview is about Sato's career at SEGA, one interesting tidbit stood out about him wanting to work on one of SEGA's biggest names...

Answer from Sato can be seen in the video below (or at 5:43 if it doesn't work):

Transcription of Sato's answer (from the subtitles in the video):

"It’s an IP that I haven’t come to before. In the sense that I want to try it, … well, Sonic. After all, when you hear SEGA you think Sonic. I’d like to get involved once at least. But for me, the so-called Sonic is, well, if I were to do it, I wouldn’t do Sonic as it was. I would like to make a completely different Sonic."

The Yakuza series, the most famous series Daisuke Sato has worked on, is quirky, fun, and brings to life some of the more ... interesting aspects of Japan to life, and I'd personally love to see some (maybe not all though) inspirations used for a new Sonic game from SEGA.

The latest game from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, released worldwide (except Japan) on November 10, 2020, and was a launch title for the new Xbox Series X/S consoles as well as last generation systems and PC. The PS5 version is scheduled for March 2, 2021.
