    Kensuke Ushio isn't a typical anime soundtrack composer. He has deconstructed Bach compositions, used watercolor painting on sheet music, and merged traditional Japanese biwa music with EDM. It makes total sense, then, that he was chosen to compose the soundtrack for the anime adaptation of the deeply experimental and fresh Chainsaw Man. We had the chance to interview Ushio about how he got connected to the production, using AI to create brand new sounds, and even cutting up and distorting music to match the violence of a chainsaw! Developed by Poppy Works, the studio behind games like Melon Journey and Slave Zero XHime's Quest follows our beloved orange mascot as she travels through a haunted forest to rescue her friends and save the New Crunchy City anime club. It's a throwback to classic Game Boy Color games with a totally period-accurate aesthetic. A huge part of that authenticity comes from the soundtrack composed by jazz fusion chiptune artist PROTODOME. We had the opportunity to talk with PROTODOME about his work on the game as well as his love for video game music, his double-life as an academic researcher, and his advice for people who want to break into the chiptune scene!
