Prisma Illya is a fantastic magical girl anime that makes full use of the Fate world it's provided with. The show starts off fairly comedic and simple, then gradually delves into character development and intense world shaking stakes. It's a Cardcaptor Sakura style parody of the Fate series where our main characters Illya and Miyu fight and seal corrupted Servants. The first season is a straightfoward magical girl show. 2wei is a little more slice of life and explores the characters' relationships. 3drei is where shit hits the fan. Despite the loli fanservice Fate front this show has, it is at heart very much a magical girl show. It's a show about friendship, acceptance, wish fulfillment, and a little girl in a pink dress with a wand. They highlight and make fun of the sillier aspects of being a magical girl, but also totally enjoy themselves in that process. The animation is consistently high quality and the fight scenes are interesting and do involve more strategy than just overpowering enemies with love and friendship. And to be honest, the loli fan service really isn't as prevalent as you would think.
I really love and would strongly recommend this show to magical girl fans. There's a very large female cast. Not only are the main characters and powerhouse characters female, but most of the side cast too. There's a large representation of people and personalities, and a lot of them are totally badass. Whether or not they're realistic is debatable, but it's enjoyable to see so many female characters fight and interact with each other about things that aren't boys.
While there are some loli fanservice moments, they don't actually appear that often. Honestly the merchandise for this show is far worse than the show actually is. It's never really out of place either. These moments have reasons for happening, and sometimes even consequences. Not all the fanservice moments end up positive, and it's usually a symbol or catalyst for changing character relations. The show tends to frame these moments as girls exploring affection, sexuality, and what the appropriate boundaries are for kids their age. Characters aren't friends off the bat. Friendship is something that is nurtured and questioned. Trust is something you earn after butting heads, yelling at each other, then understanding the other person's views.
The fight scenes are superb and they make the greatest use of their Fate background here. The magic system is well thought out and has a logic to it. It's not just fairies from another world giving them powers. Their enemies all have identifiable motives and circumstances. Th fight scenes that have real stakes and reasoning to it. Illya can't just yell at her opponent to be more kind and accepting to win. She has to physically beat them up, and sometimes she loses. Her support team is nothing short of amazing as well. You don't often get a magical girl anime where characters other than the magical girls are allowed to fight. Rin, Lluvia, and Bazett are three adult women who are strong and clever in their own right. They contribute just as much as the magical girls do, and their frank, less sparkly combat is refreshing.
Overall, Prisma Illya is basically just a more mature take on the average Precure season. You've got all the same elements, but polished and explored to a greater extent. There's 50% less fluff and twice as much impact.
