Sentai Filmworks has created a Go Fund Me page to support the losses of their employees and their families in Houston as a result of the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey. Please consider lending a hand to these people facing hardship in the anime community. Thank you.

sorry for being skeptical, but unless i see a link to Sentai's official website asking for people to donate, I'll say this is fake / a scam.
someone also made a similar one for [site that will hopefuly be gone for good], but the admins later explained that the go fund me page under their site name was fake.

could not find the announcement in their official page

if this was real, you'd expect that this (asking for donations through go fund me) would be the first thing you see in the official public announcement. that's not the case.

it is legit, nevermind. i wish well for their families as well as anyone affected by the disaster.

It's legitimate.
Please see the screenshot in the below spoiler tag:

The link on the home page does take you to the very same Go Fund Me fundraiser that the original post had linked to.
I actually donated to them about 5-6 hours ago.
Their announcement page is reserved for business-specific releases (like most companies would have for press releases).
I did double-check before donating myself, since it's being passed around on different anime sites.

It's perfectly natural to be skeptical.
I edited my last post with some more information that covers that I had the same concern initially.
Go Fund Me is one of those sites that will often have scammers or fraudulent fundraisers, especially in light of natural disasters like Hurricane Harvey.

it looks legit when you check their main wesite

i'm not a fan of sites like gofundme .. there's got to be a way to donate where 100% of your donated money is going to where it is needed.. and not to these greedy businesses

7.9% + $0.30 per donation ?

Go Fund Me isn't one of my favorite platforms to donate to.
In many cases, they're the fastest to setup, configure, organize, and market.
7.9% (+ $0.30) is around $40 of my donation that goes to the site instead of the desired destination (see: Sentai Filmworks employees).
On one hand, it's nice to know that they were able to set this up without extremely high marketing costs to get the message out there.
On the other, it's sad to see so much of a donation going to "overhead fees".

The main difference is that donating to a genuine charity yields less of an overhead as they're often registered with the IRS as "real" charities.
Of course, there are some charities like the Red Cross who still have overhead fees within the organization (like marketing, celebrity endorsements, and so forth) that have nothing to do with supplying those in need with goods or services.
In the realm of donations, though, it's often that you'll find that they have to go through a lot of odds and ends to be registered as a charity.
Go Fund Me strips away the requirements and takes a percentage to protect themselves (from fraudulent campaigns) and to ensure that they can keep the website operational.

There are always pros and cons to any system.

They sent this campaign out to their email subscribers, that's how I found out about it. I don't think too many people are seeing it since they haven't raised very much yet. They probably don't have the resources to get the word out.

I didn't realize how high the processing fees were. I guess all of the crowdfunding sites are like that. Maybe I should just mail them a check instead...

Thanks again to anyone who donated.
