I just signed up for this site's premium service. I was watching an anime [http://www.crunchyroll.com/the-testament-of-sister-new-devil/episode-1-what-i-can-do-for-you-686471?p720=1] Noticed the censorship. So I went to the options and found display mature content... Turned it on went back still censored episodes.... what is the point of disabling it if it doesnt actually effect anything? I honestly want to support the content but when they give the garbage versions that you have to pay for when you can get the good version for free it makes me doubt my choice.

It affects certain devices where such filters are required. For example, if you were viewing on a PS4 or iOS device, for example, that series wouldn't have been available to you if the filter were on.

The shows come to crunchyroll either censored or not. The maturity filter only changes which shows you get to pick from out of the bunch. Say for example i wanted to watch kaiji on my ps4. If the maturity filter was on i wouldnt even get to see kaiji as an optional show i could click to watch. Then its turned off and kaiji is suddenly an option

Not saying kaiji is affected by the filter just giving an example. One show that is affected by the filteri Gankutsuo

Hi. I've moved this over to the Site Support / Minor Questions forum.

You've misunderstood the intent of the "Show Mature Content" setting. It's not there to allow for multiple versions of a show; except for a few exceptions, CR has either a censored version of a particular show OR the uncensored version--not both.

The filter is intended to hide or display shows based on their content -- shows are distinguished from one another based on subject matter beyond whether or not "naughty bits" or gore is covered up with light bars or black bars, so both explicitly censored and non-censored shows could end up being filtered out by default.

There are other threads about anime censorship and licensing, so feel free to seek them out. The short version of why CR has many shows in the censored version is that CR acquires many shows as simulcasts, which means they get the general broadcast version--which is censored. The uncensored versions are generally reserved for premium pay channels in Japan, or for subsequent sale on disc--where a lot money comes from. They are therefore either simply not available to CR, or would be prohibitively expensive.

Would you happen to know which shows on the "Show Mature Content" setting are the uncensored versions? Is maken-ki! seasons 1 & 2, in particular, the censored versions/simulcasts or the blue-ray versions? I'm considering watching, but I'd thought I'll wait until i get more info. The list provided in the crunchyroll knowledge base article on "Why is your anime censored?" doesn't seem to be completely up to date (just from searching through the forums and comment sections).

Generally speaking, every show is censored. They are all television broadcasts, with the only known exception I have seen being one of the seasons of Samura Girls. There are perhaps a few others, but getting DVD release content like OVAs are particularly rare.

I'm afraid I don't. I don't even have a good sense of exactly which shows are affected by the Show Mature Content filter at all (and I do know that filter acts differently depending on what device you are watching from). Plus while I have a reasonably good memory for what shows CR added as simulcasts in the last few years (and thus would be censored) I don't have a good sense of which earlier shows were already here or came over as catalog titles (meaning they have a better chance of being uncensored).

However, I did check Maken-Ki's show page, and since it lists Funimation as the publisher, this suggests it was added as catalog and is therefore more likely to be uncensored. Why not just watch the first episode to confirm? In my experience, ecchi shows tend to be front loaded with the nipple and panty shots, so a first episode is likely to give you the answer.

If you do have a few specific shows you are wondering about and don't want to spend a few minutes starting to watch them to see, then you could post that list in the Advice, Info, Recommendations forum and people might be able to give definite answers about some of them.

Here's a thread there for folks to ask stuff like that:

Actually, CR does get a fair amount of back catalog after it's been broadcast and after a DVD/BD has been released. In those cases, chances are not that bad that what CR gets is the uncensored version. For example, High School DxD isn't censored.

We have 2 levels for the maturity filter. One is the level at which companies offering our apps on their devices, such as Apple or Sony, consider the content as mature. We'd risk restrictions or removal from the apps stores, if we did not flag content matching their maturity criteria. We also have our own maturity flag, for which we are using less strict criteria than the 3rd parties. Basically, if we set the flag on something, the 3rd party flag is already there anyway. Both levels only affect visibility of titles on apps and in searches.

The setting is, as others have mentioned, no toggle to make uncensored versions of content available where only a censored version is currently added. If both version are available, they are both added on the same entry, in a rather straight forward fashion, for example: /my-wife-is-the-student-council-president or /terraformars.
