Just finished up on Episode #334 and even if this is one of those episodes that takes up the slots before the Silver Soul Arc, its actually entertaining.

Finally some Shinsengumi. They always manage to spice up the smaller stories, glad to have em back.

Anyone else notice the red sword VA? I'm quite certain that was Maaya Uchida. I thought that was strange since they've been using the same exact set of VA's for decades now. New additions seem very rare to the series, so I'm wondering if that means they plan on creating a bunch of original characters now.

I am rather curious as to how actual idols would react to watching this latest episode. On a side note, this particular group (Otsuu's former fans) really dig the tsundere trope.

Gintama's takin' a break, and what a way to end the first half of the arc.

And, seriously? This was the only post in the thread for Winter 2018. Kind of surprising.

Yup, it sure is.

But judging on the comment wall for each episode, folks would rather post there than on here.
And my tendency is also more on the former. XD

I've been reading comments more the last few seasons myself, though I haven't been posting there.

Bumping this just in case anyone wants to discuss the Summer continuation of the Silver Soul Arc, though based on the light participation from Winter, I don't know what the chances are.

I actually did watch all through the Winter season, and TBH it wasn't keeping my interest even though I did find it amusing or otherwise enjoyable from time to time. I thought I might as well wrap things up by watching the Summer season. And I did watch the first episode of Summer. It was fine. I guess. But as the following weeks came around I kept remembering how not-compelling I'd found Winter, and I decided not to continue?

Anyone have anything to say that would convince me to change my mind?

I just dip in and out of the season. The silver soul arc is one of my least favourite arcs as it is tedious in some parts. I barely watched any of the first half since I didn’t really enjoy it in the manga.
I would suggest just dipping in and out of the episodes. Some parts are good and some parts are a bit meh.
I enjoyed today’s episode as it was an improvement compared to the first 3 episodes that aired.

I'm watching it but yeah, the Silver Soul arc did drag on a lot in the manga and was probably my least favorite after the current one.. I'm not a big fan of
Trying to just enjoy the anime as its own thing, though, and honestly it would have to get a whole lot worse for me not to enjoy it (like I'm kind of not enjoying the manga at present). That's probably not enough to change your mind LOL but... yeah... anyway...

Hmmm. Dipping just isn't my style. "Tedious." Yup, that's the right word. If I was having trouble filling my time with other current shows, I'd be okay with "tedious" and "meh" for the sake of being a completist, and who knows maybe one day I'll just be in the mood to binge-watch the final episodes. I think that day is not now though. Glad to know I'm not the only one not really into it, even though I've been a dutiful viewer for so long.

Thanks for sharing the thoughts! I think maybe the plot got way too "big story" "big stakes" for me. I miss the day to day silliness, or arcs that are more about personal heart-touching drama spiked with humor, than big heroics, big bad, big damage, and mostly crass humor that I don't like much anyway and am rather tired of.

I am glad that I am not the only one who was viewing the newer arcs in this manner. The shift from the episodic or short arc comedies and dramas was very disappointing for me. The way that the show is trying to do the "end of the universe" plot is not something that I think is out of line with Gintama, but when they do it over several seasons in a way in which each episode tries to outdo the last in dramatics, it gets kinda old.

When I watch other long shounen shows I expect to see things like lots of flashbacks and still frames dressed up to look epic, and maybe that is one reason I loved Gintama, it never really relied on those devises. But recently these arcs have been getting more and more cluttered with these devices, and on top of those, there is also an undesirable amount of "epic speeches". Used to be only one or two people would give a big dramatic talk now and then, but now everyone seems to be trying to one up each other in that aspect.

I wont even talk about the reduced thought behind the comedy and dialogue.

Despite this comment looking very harsh and degrading of the recent seasons, I have still watched and enjoyed them for the most part. I still get to see the characters I love doing things that, for the most part, fit with their character cast. I still occasionally get surprised by a joke (though not very often), and I still enjoy watching Gintoki doing pretty much whatever.

I guess the reason I am so hard on the recent seasons is because to me Gintama was one of the best shounen show out their, and now it has fallen to the same tropes and devices that all the other shows used, and it has ruined the unique special aspects that made the show great. I will continue watching and hoping that they either stop Gintama after this arc, or take it back to the roots of what made me fall in love with it to begin with.

Yay, I'm not the only one who feels this way! Honestly, I feel disloyal for not being into the current manga arc after loving Gintama for so many years, but it just feels like it's dragging on now. It probably should have ended with the Silver Soul arc. I totally agree about the surfeit of "epic speeches", that's a major beef of mine with Silver Soul and the current arc. After a while the speeches just get repetitive... I mean how many different ways can you actually say "We will fight for this planet and we will never give up despite [insert tragic backstory here]". And how many dying villains going "Huh, guess I was wrong but it was all because [insert tragic backstory here]" do we really need? Shut up and die FFS! (you can tell I was deeply annoyed by
) I have loved Gintama for so long, for its originality and goofy randomness and now, dare I say, it's getting... predictable and formulaic. I'm still watching and reading though, and still laughing and feels-ing. But I'm also hoping gori-san ends the series before it becomes a pathetic travesty of its former greatness.
