If a genie offered you a choice between world peace and some personal gain, what would you choose?

I'd be afraid to say "world peace", because what do they even mean by that? This is an anime site, we've all seen at least one show with a villain who wants world peace, but what they mean by that is that they want to kill or brainwash everyone. Who's to say this genie isn't like that?

If you had a billion dollars - or, let's say, unlimited resources, financial or otherwise, what would you do to improve the world?

I would donate a lot of it to education, and international communication, because I think those are the things that would lead to the most life improvement for the world. I would increase both access to education and quality of education.

I would go into details, but that would be tl;dr.

So?

It is achievable, but at a huge cost. People will have to be forced to renounce their differences and their individuality. All those who hold on to their beliefs, might be persecuted and arrested. It all comes down to forcing "peace", because the chances of it happing naturally is basically zero.

Perfectly achievable by reducing global population to 0.

World peace means a state where resources are distributed so there is no hunger, unattended sickness, and war and violence is near extinct. Just because it's virtually impossible is no reason not to strive for it. Ending famine is one that is physically achievable, we're just wasteful and disorganized.

Brainwashing people is a form of violence so... that's not world peace. But things like crime are largely a reaction to economic destitution. People don't commit crimes, at least blue collar crimes, when society is well organized, their basic needs are secure, and prospective futures are high. Looking at societies with low crime rates they tend to have strong communal structures and safety nets.

Complete world peace may be Millennia away but it's never "impossible". Just incredibly improbable, especially when going about it in an unproblematic way. One should instead focus on what can be done now to create a more peaceful and stable planet.

An none operational term that amounts to a buzzword.

Nothing, to me. "World Peace" is just another vague empty term ( that probably originated from some desperate myopic ideal) that anyone can project whatever they want onto which is fine but, I'm pretty sure that we can't progress towards anywhere if we're all so polarized about what it even means, so in essence it's like tying to reach a mirage, unachievable.

I'd tell the genie to give me the personal gain cause I'm selfish like that.

World peace to me is something horrible authoritarian.

The world needs chaos to advance world peace would just lead it to the end.

The concept of world peace has always struck me as a childish idea that ignores the reality of human nature.

personal gain peace through domination is what even genuine utopia would end in I wouldn't bother trying to improve the world in any significant way just make the lives of people who I know could use an easier life and not ask for it or more and don't expect it easier.

Hitler wanted peace.

Stalin wanted peace.

Mao wanted peace.

Peace at any price can always be had. But the price to be paid is always too high...and as this example shows, note that all 3 of those tyrants who each killed untold millions, were all contemporaries of each other.

I'm reminded of an X-Files episode

World peace is just slavery and subjugation under an oppressive world government. Actually it reminds me of One Peace's world government and their "justice".

Conflict is natural and is the law of evolution. Those who cannot stand strong will get eliminated by those who will stand strong. You prepare for war so that you may have peace.
