Being honest 80% of anime on this website is what I would consider 2 star level. Yet almost every show is sitting at 4.5 or higher in terms of rating. Why is there such a lack of negative reviews?

I think i have seen a thread like this before. I agree though. I've given several anime's here 3 stars but they usually always have 5 overall.

Probably because people don't watch anime they don't like, so the only people bothering to rate them are the people who watched and enjoyed them.

It is a bit of a problem where people have basically two ratings: Greatest Thing Ever and Trash.

For amateur reviews it is mainly because people just can't be bothered with the mediocre material. Why slog through a 2 to 3 show just to write a review that says, "It was meh" when you could be doing something fun and/or productive? Most people watch shows because they are fun, and will just drop those they aren't finding fun and move on. Then there is the whole 8.0 issue with professional reviews but that's going off topic.

Because people watch an anime and If they enjoyed the experience they will likely give it 4-5 stars unless they are very experienced and have seen a ton of anime and therefore seen some that were AMAZING and know the difference.

Generally leisurely watching a show you are into is a good experience so reviews reflect that. If everyone was watching anime with critiquing and judgement about the creators in mind, they already wouldnt be enjoying it most likely unless it was REALLY REALLY good.

So when judging an action that is at its base a leisurely and enjoyable experience most are going to let their rating reflect that without bias just because there is other stuff that is better.

Other people are more critical and whiny an end up thinking everything sucks. (OP) While these are the minority and annoy the fk outta me they still exist.

When you watching an anime thinking "bleh, I have heard better soundtracks" "The animation isnt as good as *blank*" or "That line didnt make sense writers are stupid" you lose all immersion into the anime so alot of people wont think like that. Most people enjoy enjoying life, some only see the faults in everything.

Eh, I've seen a number of shows rated less than 4 when looking for something new to watch. The lesser rated ones are harder to find on average unless you search for them by name, though, or go really far down the popular sorting option or check out every series in a season.

Like other people have said not too many people rate a show unless they have a strong opinion about it either way, so you just naturally get a lot of 1s and 5s. Probably the scale is tilted in favor of 5s because people are more likely to rate it if they stayed around longer, which in turn will be more likely if they liked it. It's unfortunate, but not likely to change.

I've only written a few reviews (generally I just don't think of / forget about doing it. Maybe someday I'll go back and fill in reviews for all the watched shows that I keep in one section of my queue...), but in theory at least I ascribe to the following rating scale

1 complete trash
2 a bad show, but not complete trash and maybe some minorly redeeming qualities. A few people may find it somewhat entertaining for whatever reason, and it would probably not be too bad to put on in the background while doing something else if you like to do that sort of thing.
3 a sort of meh show. Not really good but not really bad. may or may not be generally entertaining depending on the mood you're in and your tastes
4 a good, solid show. Not a masterpiece, but a good add to any queue if you like or at least don't hate the genre. Entertaining, and may even be a personal favorite for one reason or another, even acknowledging it's faults. May also be in most places a 5 but had a fatal flaw, such as a badly botched anime-original ending.
5 a masterpiece or near-masterpiece. may not be completely polished and may still be able to nitpick on a couple of things that don't really impact the story, if you're picky, though. (ie. RWBY's animation, particularly in earlier seasons, which personally I think is a charming element of its style even if not particularly "sophisticated" and even if there are some overlapping objects.)

Most of what I stick with to any degree will be 3.5-5 on this scale. (I wish we still had half-star differences allowable.) Ideally every review would would have an entire watch of the show behind it, but you only have so much time and some things are just too bad to torture yourself watching...

Some examples of how I would rate things

1 no examples here because I don't get near anything that would end up as this
2 In Another World With My Smartphone
3 Chain Chronicle
3.5 Akashic Records; The Irregular at Magic High; Knights and Magic (which was actually really fun, even if lacking in certain areas; would recommend to anyone who wants a fun show where you don't have to think too much who doesn't mind a blatantly OP MC)
4 Fairy Tail (although a personal favorite, sometimes the plot can be really loose, even for a typical shonen); Saga of Tanya the Evil; Konosuba
4.5 Re:Zero (assuming it gets a second season and doesn't just keep hanging); WorldEnd (left things rather unfinished); Interviews with Monster Girls
5 Madoka Magica; Mushishi; Erased; RWBY

I have a 3 episode rule I usually follow for anime. If I don't like an anime after 3 episodes I drop it and won't even bother to rate it due to not seeing the whole thing (it's like condemning an entire music CD when all you've heard is one song). If I enjoy the anime even the slightest I'll watch the entire season then rate it. I will give it the rating I see fit but it'll usually never be a 0-2 star rating just due to me giving up on any anime I'd rate that low well before the end of the season. The rating I see fit may not be exactly the rating you'd see fit depending on where you specifically put a certain genre in your love/hate list.

Make alt accounts and do it yourself, but since you asked why to the general public and not to each reviewer themselves I'd argue you've no idea what your point is once you've gotten this answer thus bringing me to the conclusion that this entire topic is unproductive at best.

People watch what they like, so of course I haven't given a negative review for everything I hated. I just dropped it and moved on. This is why yelp and other review based sites, even amazon can be chaotic and biased in their reviews.

Furthermore it's subjective, maybe you and I are one of the only ones who thinks that animes have been not as enjoyable lately. It's all a matter of what vantage point one is looking through.

Satisfied? I'd imagine not.

Now a much more satisfying inquiry would be "where can I get better review/ratings of shows?
> My anime list (dot) com.

Now if your point is merely to find these better reviews I hope you're satisfied.
If it's to change CR to a sophisticated reviewing site, good luck.

I don't really see why it'd matter. Anime is, after all, subjective and most people that bother to leave reviews are those that enjoyed the show. There are plenty of shows that I'd consider to be awful/overrated; but, I just don't go out of my way to give a negative review. Crunchyroll really isn't the place to look for detailed reviews, in my opinion. To answer your question, I think more people are inclined to review a show if they liked it as opposed to the latter. I've only ever reviewed five shows and the scoring was admittedly rather high and positive.

If I could rate that avatar it would be in the negative reviews.

I always find fault with something, so, rarely is it above 3 stars, mostly because I'm brutally honest about the whole thing. but I have noticed the over rating, perhaps these are new anime folks who don't know a lot about anime and think it's all great? I don't rate it on boob, gore or art style alone I give it a look entirely. there's a few I have never rated because it's negative. but there are other sites that have higher ratings of something and others have lower ratings, Anime Planet seems to be more accurate to rating than some of the ratings I've seen on the shows I've streamed here on CR. some stuff I've watched and I'm like, why did I agree to watch it base on ratings alone, it was horrible/etc. so, base it upon what you take from the show and don't trust other's reviews/ratings on it.

Better Question why are critic reviews from proffesionals always too high or too low.
I always end up relying on viewers reviews because of that.
